Meiden wins Red Dot Award: Product Design 2018 for operation and measurement system unit for automotive test equipment

2018-04-09

Meidensha Corporation (Meiden) has won this year’s Red Dot Award – a German prize and one of the three major design awards in the world – in the Product Design category for MEIDACS II, an operation and measurement system unit for automotive test equipment. This is the second internationally renowned design prize that the product has won, following the Good Design Award of Japan it received in October 2017.

Meiden has provided numerous automotive equipment products to domestic and foreign carmakers and car parts suppliers. MEIDACS II is a brand-new operation and measurement system that will go on the market in 2018.

Meiden aims to create new value together with clients developing next-generation vehicles such as electric and driverless cars, by developing products with new functions that fuse hardware and software for making model-based development.

Product name: MEIDACS II

Outline: MEIDACS II

MEIDACS II provides an optimal operation environment when testing and evaluating exhaust gas emissions, fuel efficiency and durability on engine-testing benches. The modular system can be configured as a desk, a standing desk and a control panel to match each client’s environment for conducting tests. All are designed so users can conduct maintenance work from the front. The unit’s design eliminates the need for space to conduct maintenance between a rear wall and the equipment, allowing more user space for operations and, as a result, more comfort. The compact standing desk can accommodate equipment equivalent in size to that of the control panel but operates similarly to a desk, enhancing work efficiency when the user is standing.

Background for designing MEIDACS II

Operation and measurement system units for automobile testing equipment need to carry out several development tasks and evaluation tests that take an extended period of time. Meiden has long tried to improve the functions of its operation and measurement system units, and the company’s new design took into account work efficiency and operability to reduce the stress placed on users when they work for long hours as well as making maintenance work easier to conduct.

Comments from the designers

We designed this system with the goal of offering greater comfort to workers who conduct tests. We made sure the unit has enough room for a user to extend their legs while sitting at the desk and work comfortably even when documents or an additional device is placed on the desk. We tried to ensure that users will not get tired easily even when they work for long hours, and this system allows workers to use space more effectively and to comfortably operate the system regardless of their working environment.
