Meiden obtains the highest rating for ESG/SDGs-based syndicated loan

Meidensha Corporation (Meiden) obtained the highest rating via a syndicated loan by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC; President & CEO: Makoto Takashima). The loan is based on account of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors together with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Based on standards drawn up by SMBC and the Japan Research Institute, Ltd.(President & CEO: Masahiro Fuchizaki),the syndicated loan provided to Meiden comes on assessment of the applicant’s efforts toward to ESG targets and SDGs, as well as its disclosure of information. The loan is then formed via financial institutions that approve of the results from these ESG and SDGs assessments.

Meiden meets the highest rating after receiving high marks on each ESG segment and on its actions and transparency on sustainable corporate management. The firm also received praise for its enthusiasm in contributing to achieving SDGs through its business activities.


Major points of the evaluation

Environment
The company understands the amounts of CO2 and industrial waste generated by the firm and its affiliates in Japan and abroad during the course of their business activities, and recognizes how these impact the environment. The company even knows the amount of CO2 generated by its entire supply chain.

Society
The company sees long working hours as a management issue that must be addressed, and to this end established a Division to Promote Work Style Reform in the 2017 fiscal year. A new action plan, called “Smart Work 2020” is designed to make its operations more efficient through techniques such as Robotic Process Automation (RPA), and to bolster the reworking of its manufacturing processes.

Governance
The company has approved the president’s CSR policy on compliance, corporate governance and risk management. This policy aims to empower each employee to take an active role in the social responsibility of the Meiden Group and to help translate its corporate philosophy into action during their everyday work.

SDGs
The company has developed energy solution services, as well as operations and services that can help solve problems in social infrastructure projects and other areas. Through the proliferation of such services, the company has helped its clients reduce their environmental impacts, which contributes to global efforts to achieve SDGs.


Meiden regards its ESG efforts as tantamount to the implementation of its corporate philosophy, and as a fundamental part of maintaining sustainable growth in the Meiden Group. In the Meidensha Report 2018, the company identified business opportunities and challenges related to SDGs, described how Meiden’s business activities are affecting the environment and society.

The Meiden Group will continue to manufacture products that benefit society and help create sustainable values, while contributing to the resolution of social issues, including those covered by SDGs.
