News Releases 2020Power supply system for Singapore’s MRT Thomson-East Coast line (stage 1) completed: Section opens January 31

Meiden Singapore Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of Meidensha Corporation (Meiden), completed the installation and necessary work on a power supply system for stage 1 of Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Thomson-East Coast line in September 2019 as a sole contractor (Contract T253) for the section concerned with the nation’s Land Transport Authority (LTA). The section opened on January 31, 2020.

This 43-km line will eventually connect Woodlands in the north and Sungei Bedok in the east via central residential areas and downtown in the south. The commuter line will have 32 stations. Meiden Singapore received an order for sets of power supply systems for a train depot and 22 of the stations (stages 1-3). As a system contractor, Meiden Singapore is entrusted to conduct comprehensive work from design, manufacturing and installation to conducting necessary tests of 66kV transformers, 22kV transformers, 750V DC power feeding system and Power Supply Data Analysis System. Moreover, Meiden Singapore is scheduled to provide components for key equipment for stages 4-5 of the line, such as Power Supply Data Analysis System and Emergency Traction Tripping System. This means that Meiden Singapore is involved in all sections of the line, which will be opened in phases with the scheduled opening of the entire line in 2024.

MRT, a major modernization project that has been undertaken by Singapore since its founding, is the most sophisticated urban railway in Southeast Asia.

Meiden Group has joined projects to construct MRT lines since it participated in the first and second phases (for constructing the East-West and North-South lines) in 1985 as a power supply system contactor. Currently, it is engaged in an unprecedentedly large-scale project to renew all electrical facilities for the East-West and North-South lines, about 30 years after their initial openings. The project is due to be completed in 2023.

Meiden Group will continue to harness the technology and experience in overseas railway projects it has accumulated to help solve environmental problems faced by large cities and contribute to their economic growth. By doing this, Meiden will help realize a sustainable society led by the use of railways.
