Meidensha Corporation (Meiden) has won the Green Bond Award of the 5th Sustainable Finance Awards from Research Institute for Environmental Finance (RIEF) in recognition of its efforts to enhance the quality of the Green Bond market in Japan.

                                           

The awards, which RIEF established in 2015, are designed to commend financial institutions, companies and organizations for their contributions to the development of environmental and sustainable finances. The Green Bond Award was added to the awards in 2018.

The candidates – companies aiming to procure funds in a sustainable manner, local governments and related organs seeking to ensure the sustainable circulation of funds, as well as financial institutions – are scored for six items, such as novelty, the level of ESG (environment, social and governance) and profitability. The winners are decided based on the total scores as well as qualitative evaluations.

Meiden was awarded for helping improve the quality of the Japanese Green Bond market. It became the first Japanese company to procure a capital investment fund with Green Bonds last year when it raised the money to build facilities for making intermediate goods for electric vehicles. It also became the first Japanese private company to obtain a certification under the rigid Climate Bonds Standards from the Climate Bonds Initiative, an international non-governmental organization based in the United Kingdom dedicated to promoting large-scale investments for realizing a low-carbon society.

Meiden’s Green Bonds
Meiden issued Green Bonds through public offering in July 2019 to raise funds to build facilities for mass-producing motors and inverters for electric vehicles. Through the bond issuance, Meiden will try to expand the range of fund procurement resources and deepen understanding about Meiden’s proactive environmental measures among a broad range of stakeholders.
